A two-month journey through the Land Down Under has been cancelled in the wake of the death of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the cruise liner on a isolated coastal location.

The passenger had been walking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the excursion for a pause. The vessel departed without her and returned several hours later after the personnel realised the lady was not present.

A large-scale hunt located her remains the following day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the incident, together with investigators and the medical examiner.

Head of the shipping company stated that guests and crew on the vessel were told that the rest of the voyage had been called off due to the "tragic passing and earlier mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the passengers via chartered flights".

Officials also issued an updated statement, and said they had "delivered a order to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from entering the vessel.

The representative said that they would visit the liner in the port city upon its return.

The ship originally sailed from Cairns on 24 October, and was merely two days into the voyage at the moment of the senior passenger's passing. The remote island was the first stop on the voyage.

Guests on board - who usually pay substantial amounts of currency to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a day trip with the choice of hiking or snorkeling.

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "shocked and grieved that the liner left the island after an planned tour without my parent".

Through her comments, she described her mother as an "active elderly person" who was a affiliate of a walking group.

She further stated that she wished the inquiry would be able to identify what "the operator should have performed that might have protected Mum's existence".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a very hot day, and mother became unwell on the mountain ascent," she revealed.

Company Reaction

Through an announcement, the CEO affirmed that the operator was "cooperating fully with authorities to support their examination".

He stated that the firm was "extremely apologetic that this has transpired" and had offered its complete assistance to the relatives.

The ship accommodates up to a hundred twenty passengers with nearly fifty crew, according to official data. It was specially constructed to reach remote locations of Australia's coastline and is fitted with "auxiliary vessels" - small boats used to ferry passengers on shore trips.

Incidents like this are rare, and passenger vessels have protocols to record which passengers are embarking or getting off, according to travel authorities.
